International Day of Happiness

19 Mar 2019

If there was ever a time when we needed some semblance of happiness it would be now.

With so many lives lost through terrorism, natural disasters, war, knife crime, gun crime – it would be ok for anyone to assume that happiness is not ours to have. We are constantly at the mercy of bad news.

It was for exactly this reason why #InternationalDayOfHappiness has been celebrated since March 20th, 2013.

Yep, you read it right – a whole day dedicated to happiness. The United Nations came up with the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. And we here at ADRA-UK are celebrating with the rest of the world!

With the theme this year being ‘happier together’, the day could not have come at a better time. We are a world divided but as the UN has stated ‘Happiness is a fundamental human right; happiness forever is a fundamental human goal’.

The reminder that our happiness matters, but happiness shared is even better, comes at a time when mental health-related illnesses are on the rise as we become less social through our overuse of social media.

However, studies have shown that by doing something for someone else our happiness is increased – so a theme of happier together is a no brainer! Brodwin, Orwig and Spector conclude that “people feel happier after doing something generous because activity in the brain regions involved in helping others seems to override the activity in the regions linked with personal reward.”

So our happiness is to a degree reliant on others that we help or that help us. ADRA, as a global network and ADRA-UK, believe in this ethos and we want to encourage you to help us continue to change lives by making our mission a reality: a world free from poverty and distress.

We did so much together in 2018. Between water programmes, food and health projects, education and child protection initiatives, and major emergencies in every corner of the world, your support has helped us reach 1.3m people in need.

We want to keep this momentum going by helping even more people in 2019. Your contribution will travel the world and go to work where it is needed most urgently.

Because ADRA is part of a worldwide network we have been able to respond to the disasters quickly but there is much that still needs doing and we cannot do it without YOU.

Choose to make someone happy today. and in turn receive some happiness as well. We are all happier together.
